Turkey & Cheese Toasty Sandwich Roll

Cooking when your audience is children is high highs and low lows.  It’s like sometimes (let’s be honest, few an far between) they’re scraping the plate, and sometimes they’re rejecting your dinner for literally no reason.  Primo example: I served popcorn shrimp the other day and my 5 year old hated it.  He carried on and on, spent some time swooning to the ground in disgust and just overall won the Academy Award for Dinner Hatred category.  Fast forward four days and my mom brings over a shrimp cocktail and that same son is tossing back shrimp like he’s a seagull on a boardwalk.  So you only like fancy shrimp?  You are a  fancy seagull?  I don’t know — sending that as a reader tip to Unsolved Mysteries, but in the meantime I have a recipe that our whole family loves and bonus:  it’s just three ingredients.  You can throw this together any old time and it’s sure to be a fan favorite!

Toasty Turkey & Cheese Sandwich Roll Ingredients

Grab your can of French bread dough, cheddar cheese and sliced turkey.  I’ve made this a lot of times and for whatever reason, smoked turkey is insanely superior to all other turkey varieties.   It’s delicious with all types, but it is a certified taste sensation with smoked turkey.

Toasty Turkey & Cheese Sandwich Roll How-to

Open your French bread dough and carefully pick at the seam to unroll it into a flat sheet.  Don’t worry if it’s shaggy around the edges, just be careful to pinch and seal any holes that come up as you’re unwrapping.  Spread your shredded cheddar cheese on top and then the turkey on top of that.   Leave about 1/2″ around the edges of the dough.

Start at one end and slowly roll the dough closed.  Make your final roll an tuck the bread dough ends under and make sure the seam is under the roll.  Side note- this is the worst  shot of my Silpat mats in existence.  They work great but just never look great ever again.  Yikes.  Please don’t judge me.

Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes with the rack in the middle position (otherwise it gets too toasty on top and not done enough in the middle)  Slice it up and enjoy!

This is one of our crowd pleasers (for now, who knows what my son’s likes/dislikes will be next week).  I’ll stay tuned on that and I hope you have a great week!
